Never letting anyone define you is SO damned courageous.
I so love this quote about never letting anyone define you from "The Queen of Porn" Jenna Jameson (who one assumes would certainly know a thing or two about being judged and put in a sticky-labelled box):
My definition of courage is never letting anyone define you.
Many, many folk in numerous guises will try, but ultimately only you get to define you, yes?
Never letting anyone define you is crazy essential - hell it's IMPERATIVE! Because everyone else comes with their own bias and perhaps more than sometimes, their own agenda too.
No, it's not always going to be easy to evade the judgement of other people, especially if you're doing something a bit leftfield; it does take courage. But when we put more stock in someone else's opinion of us ahead of what our own self-connection tells us, then (please excuse my le français here) but surely at that point it's getting pretty f*@ked!
It's redeemable though ...I have found anyway Great news! We can reclaim ourselves!
So, I like to remind myself of this Jenna Jameson quote often, I find it very useful. Also, after hiding under the proverbial bushel for far too long (about 40-something years), feeling courageous nowadays gives me a bloody great THRILL!
Yes, it does take courage to be truly you - shiteloads of it sometimes if one is being brutally honest ...to start and to keep on taking steps (often scary, challenging steps) in the direction in which your soul is calling you.
But it's worth it. Keep going! (I tell myself this frequently too.)
The truth is that you will always be what others think you are in their eyes. This is not your problem of course ...unless you agree with them.
WE HOLD ALL OUR OWN POWER.
Only you define you. Do you promise?
